History of Kanata  United Church

The first Worship Service of Kanata United Church was held at the Beaverbrook Community center on Oct. 2, 1966. Rev. R.L. Bacon led the service. May 7, 1967 was Constitution Sunday with 77 Charter members.

Over the years many ministers have helped us become a family growing in faith, the Reverends Leonard Bacon, Howard Hamilton, Murray McBride, John Pressey, Doug Heard, Joanne Barr, Ken Robinson, Karen Niven-Wigston, Peter Lougheed, Eileen Hepplewhite and Angela Bailey.

KUC has worshiped at five locations, Beaverbrook Community Center, Stephen Leacock Public School, Christ Risen Lutheran Church (Summers), Earl of March High School and finally in our own Church Building 33 Leacock Drive dedicated on Feb. 8, 1987. We are grateful to the assistance given us by the Ottawa Presbytery Extension Committee - free land, and a very generous loan by United Church of Canada Ventures in Mission. A great team effort was made by our building committee, Barry Padolsky, Architect, and our minister Rev. Ken Robinson.

Our sanctuary has been enhanced by the addition of a sound system a Young Chang grand piano, an impressive Guilbault-Therien pipe organ and beautiful stained glass memorial windows.

Throughout the year our Allelulia children's choir, Intermediate and Adult choirs inspire us with song and help with special plays and pageants. Many people have made banners to brighten the Sanctuary.

The Official Board with its many committees, the Martha's and Mary's (women's group), Mens Group, Youth Group, CGIT  and the church cleaning crews assisted by Community Service workers and others help us to grow.

Our Pastoral Care Team, one of the first in the Ottawa area, was started under Rev. Doug Heard, and continues to assist ministers, in caring for those with special needs.

Kanata United Church has hosted five Ministerial interns, Rev. Jim Christie, Rev. Linda Thomas Rev. Martha Ter Kuile, Rev. Judy Stark, Rev. Kathryn Peate and Rev. Jessica McCrae. They have been a blessing to us and our prayers go with them.

Our major fundraisers are the Fall Fair Auction, Book Sale, Flea Market and Mushroom Compost sale. These events help to fund local outreach and the United Church of Canada Mission & Service Fund. Outreach activities have always enjoyed wide support at Kanata United Church.
